New Beginnings

I just had a cheering thought. I realized that the newness of 2013 doesn’t have to wear off. In fact, every moment of this year can be a new beginning.

I’m especially excited about this because I see a new way of improving the next 365 days–a way that will work better than New Year’s resolutions. (I am spinning off here from a comment by my new pastor, Rev. Ronald Callahan.)

First, a word about resolutions. They are only as good as our desire and will to follow them on any given day. These tend to get weaker until, eventually, we don’t even think about our resolutions anymore. We start muddling through the new year the same as we did the year before. (I know there are exceptions, but I’m talking to the millions of people—like myself—who let ourselves down every year.)

The problem, as I see it now, is we try to keep our resolutions by ourselves. We don’t have to. Jesus offers us life on a whole new basis. If we allow his Spirit to fully live in us, at any moment we can step out of the limitations of our humanness and into his goodness, love, joy, peace, self-control.

So—the key to keeping this year fresh and new is: Don’t bog down when you mess up. Just accept the Lord’s enablement to start over again. And again. And again. Do you think he will get tired of your having to start over so many times? I don’t think so! I believe he will be too busy rejoicing that you aren’t giving in to failure any more. Besides . . . choosing over and over to let Christ live in you is the way your personality improves and your character becomes like Christ’s.

As your internet friend, I wish for you that 2013 will be filled with triumphant new beginnings because of Christ.
